The Problem with Most Greeting Card Aisles
Posted by Jen Komaromi on May 26th 2026
There’s a reason people get oddly excited when they walk into the greeting card section at Jenny K.
Honestly, most greeting card aisles have become kind of terrible.
You know the experience. You stand shoulder-to-shoulder with someone in a cramped aisle, flipping through layered cards that all start to blur together. Half the cards are hidden behind each other, the messages feel overly wordy or generic, and somehow you still can’t find the right birthday card.
We hear it all the time:
“I can never find a good card anymore.”
That’s exactly why we’ve spent years building a greeting card section that feels different.
At Jenny K, we currently have nearly 2,500 greeting cards in stock covering just about every occasion imaginable: birthdays, sympathy, thank you, graduation, retirement, weddings, anniversaries, new babies, encouragement, and more.
But what customers seem to notice first isn’t just the number of cards — it’s how easy they are to shop.
Unlike many stores where cards are layered in overlapping pockets, most of our cards are displayed single-facing so you can actually see the artwork and quickly browse. Birthday cards are organized in spinner racks, while many other categories are displayed on wall shelves that make it easier to take your time and actually enjoy the process.
And people do enjoy it.
Some customers come in for one card and leave with six. Others stock up for months at a time. We regularly receive online orders with dozens of cards because people love having a “card drawer” at home ready for birthdays, thank-you notes, sympathy cards, and last-minute celebrations.
In fact, this morning alone, 8 out of our first 9 customers purchased greeting cards.
Another thing customers tell us? They’re tired of cards that feel overly mushy or generic.
People are increasingly drawn to cards with cleaner design, simpler captions, thoughtful artwork, and humor that actually feels funny.
Some customers love the charming illustrations from Biely & Shoaf featuring artists like Katie Daisy and Louise Mulgrew. Others head straight for the hilariously relatable aging humor from Rosie Made a Thing and Oatmeal Studios.
And then there are the wildly popular pop-up bouquet cards from FreshCut Paper — often discovered through social media ads before customers realize they can shop them locally right here in El Cerrito.
We also care deeply about sustainability. Many of the cards we carry are printed on recycled or FSC-certified paper using environmentally responsible practices. Beautiful cards shouldn’t come at the expense of the planet.
Over the years, many retailers quietly shrank their greeting card sections. We went the opposite direction.
Because despite texts, emojis, and quick messages, people still care about handwritten connection. A good card still gets displayed on refrigerators, tucked into keepsake boxes, and reread years later.
And apparently, people are still searching for places that make finding that perfect card feel easy again.
You can browse our greeting card collection in-store at Jenny K in El Cerrito, California, or shop online for shipping, easy in-store pickup, or local delivery. Customers also love our easy parking and our FiveStars rewards program — just text “JennyK” to 578-277 to join.
